Body condition score: is your dog a healthy weight?

Scale weight alone does not tell you if your dog is at a healthy weight. Body condition score gives you a standardized way to assess your dog's actual fat coverage regardless of breed or size.

What is body condition score?

BCS is a 9-point scale used by veterinarians to evaluate whether a dog is underweight, ideal, or overweight. A score of 4 or 5 is considered ideal. Below 3 is underweight. Above 6 is overweight. Above 7 is obese.

How to assess your dog

You do not need a vet visit to do a basic BCS check. Feel and look for three things:

Ribs: Run your fingers along the ribcage with light pressure. You should feel each rib easily without pressing hard, but ribs should not be visible through the skin. Visible ribs indicate underweight. Having to press firmly just to find them indicates overweight.

Waist: Look at your dog from directly above. There should be a visible narrowing between the rib cage and hips. A dog at ideal weight has a defined hourglass shape when viewed from above. No visible waist means excess weight.

Belly tuck: Look from the side. The abdomen should tuck upward from the chest toward the hind legs. A flat or sagging belly line suggests the dog is carrying extra weight.

Why BCS matters more than scale weight

A Labrador and a Greyhound can weigh the same and have completely different healthy body compositions. BCS removes breed variation from the equation. It also responds to short-term changes faster than the scale — you can reassess every few weeks and catch weight drift before it becomes a problem.

Adjusting portions based on BCS

If your dog's BCS is above 5, reduce daily portions by 10 to 15 percent and recheck in four weeks. If below 4, increase by 10 percent. Make small adjustments rather than large ones. Sudden calorie swings are harder on digestion and harder to calibrate accurately.
